Győr

Győr

All those cities that are successful in their history has an important characteristic, that is they were built on the side of a river. This provided protection, trade hereby enrichment, developement, and the possobility to meet a lot more nations.

Győr is such a success story in the heart of Europe, where this life has been going on for three thousand years.  The location of Győr is especially prosperous not only because of the three rivers but the closeness of that three european capital.

The rivers are still major parts of the city. Their most important value nowdays is their beauty. The panoramic riverside promenade surrounding the historycal downton is surely unique in Eurpe.  It is easy to go about dreamily for hours on this promenade enjoying the fantastic view where the thre rivers Mosoni Duna-Rába-Rábca encounter.

Győr has been holding out for some millenia, which appears in its arcchitecture. The narrow twisting alleys remind us to the middle ages, however the historical palaces’ inside courts and atriums show us the work of those renaissance masters, that worked in Győr.

The current appearance of the city is typically formed by baroque times. The corner balconies of the colourful palaces are peculiarly remarkable as well as the renovated signs on the frontispieces.  Győr’s compelling Baroque main square with a water feature in the summer months, is the centre of the city’s life and events.

Győr is well known by its cultural and sport life beacause here works the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, the Győr Ballet, the Audi Eto woman handball team. The most Hungarians remember Győr because of  the statue of St. Ladislaus, the Weeping Madonna painting, soda-water siphon, the spritzer, a Győrkőcfesztivál, as well as the Iron rooster, with the Iron Rooster puppetshow. We cannot miss out the famous Theatre of Győr either.
